What is Sucralose?

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that has an intense sweet taste, about 600 to 650 times sweeter than sugar. Although very sweet, sucralose has almost no calories because most of the amount is excreted through the body without being digested. Therefore, sucralose is often used as a low-calorie or calorie-free alternative sweetener in foods and drinks.

Sucralose was discovered in 1976 by scientists at a British pharmaceutical company who were looking for a way to produce a new compound for use as a pesticide. However, they found that the resulting compound had a very sweet taste. Sucralose was finally approved for use as an artificial sweetener by the United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1998.
